A(ugust) Schwidernoch, Deutsch-Wagram

Deutsch-Wagram is 15 km from Vienna, more of less a village around 1900. Another publisher of the same period was Karl Schwidernoch of Vienna (sse more below). Both published Gruss aus .. cards (Karl more) but August published a lot of figure and portrait cards, including portraits with real hair attached. Some cards also have a printed D.H.C. logo on the bottom edge. The first example must have been printed by Illert & Ewald, Gross-Steinheim-Hanau, a printer who sold this card wholesale.

Karl Schwidernoch, Vienna

There is more about Karl in History of the company Karl Schwidernoch. This gives an interesting sidelight on the craze for the cards at the time. "Hardly a village or Inn will be found without postcards". Karl Schwidernoch produced over 10,000 different cards.
