Hartmann, London

Frederick Hartmann, 1902-1909, 45 Farringdon Street. Hartmann was in the indigo trade but persuaded by his German manager to take up postcards in the off season. He more or less immediately invented the divided back, but at first this was only allowed in the UK. Produced many views of Great Britain, printed in Saxony, which use the Hartmann emblem on the reverse. But also produced figurative cards such as this one. (Another example was a series of six embossed cards of cats by Louis Wain, priced at sixpence for the set.) Hartman is one of the publishers covered in the Metropostcard list.
