Scherer, Nabholz & Co, Moscow

Scherer (N.N.? Martin?) and Nabholz (Georgy I.) set up a successful photographic studio in Moscow around 1860. At some stage Scherer set up another studio in Dresden (M Scherer & Comp., Moscau & Dresden, later M Scherer & H Engler, 34 Pragerstrasse.) Cabinet cards from these studios are on auction sites, only expensive if the sitter is well known, eg Tolstoy. The Moscow studio went on to produce postcards, printed by collotype, occasionally coloured. These are usually Russian scenes or types. ("Types" is postcard jargon for cards showing people in local costume or employment). The cards do not name a photographer. According to the Metro site Scherer and Nabholz were Swiss photographers and produced postcards up to 1911.
