This site is like a blog as it is continually updated. A major part of it is a reference collection based on cards produced by fourteen of the largest German postcard publishers from the first quarter of the 20th century. The series covered by these German publishers are primarily photographic images of people - performers, models and children - many of whom can be identified and others who are recognised only through their frequent appearance on postcards. This reference collection also includes cards from other publishers (both within and outside Germany) where the cards overlap the German publishers in their coverage. Cards are added as they are identified.
More like a traditional blog are the sections on specific topics that the contributors find attractive. These sections are more for browsing than for consultation. Some are explored in greater depth than others. The topic sections contain both photos and illustrations. Some topics are narrow in scope and small in size. Examples are cards with additional material added to the surface such as glitter or embroidery. Within these small sets, an effort has been made to seek sample cards to provide a representative selection of the topic. Other topics, such as Cats or Dolls, are of a broader interest and occur frequently in most large collections. The cards shown here (there are a lot!) are those which we have access to, without us specifically searching for more examples.
The images in the collection were gathered by Jean Ritsema (j_ritsema@msn.com) and David Schofield (rtcards@rthcards.co.uk). There is no intention to infringe on any copyright. If there are objections to any of the images let us know so we can correct the problem.
